Intro Text for Monitoring Tunnels
Introduce the sections below and mention Risk mitigation, Design validation, value engineering, and construction control, and automation.
- Tunnel Construction
- Protecting Adjacent Properties
- Protecting Existing Tunnels
Photo at top will be a tunnel project.
Other images on the page should be drawings as they become available. Photos can be a stand-in until drawings are done. Drawings can show more than a photo: placement of the sensors in the tunnel and on the surrounding features, such as buildings and roads.
Cut and Cover
Cut-and-cover is a method of construction for shallow tunnels where a trench is excavated and roofed over with an overhead support system strong enough to carry the load of what is to be built above the tunnel.
Typical monitoring requirements due to the method, with instruments mentioned
A tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of soil and rock strata. Also mention shafts for the TBM.
Typical monitoring requirements due to the method, with instruments mentioned (and links). Shafts where machine is started, vent shafts, station boxes, deformation of surface structures along the alignment of the tunnel, possible monitoring of compensation grouting. etc ..
