DeviAligner Tool

DeviAligner

The DeviAligner helps the drill operator align the rig and mast to the target azimuth and inclination for a boring.

The Aligner is strapped to the drill rod or header and transmits its azimuth and inclination measurements to a Bluetooth readout. Watching the readout, the operator manipulates the mast until values from the Aligner match the target azimuth and inclination. The Aligner is removed before drilling starts.

The DeviAligner is not affected by magnetics and works at both surface and underground sites. It is ideal for high precision jobs where there are multiple angles to be drilled.

Operation Overview

  1. Move the rig to the surveyed location for the borehole. Place the rig in the drilling position.
  2. Use the Bluetooth readout to set up the DeviAligner. Enter the latitude, target azimuth, and target inclination. The readout displays this information.
  3. Strap the DeviAligner to the drill rod or header near the entry point. The Aligner continuously transmits azimuth and inclination measurements to the readout.
  4. Watching the readout, manipulate the mast until values transmitted from the Aligner match the target azimuth and inclination displayed on the readout.
  5. Finally, slide the rod to the start point on the ground and remove and store the DeviAligner.

Readout & App

A rugged Android Smartphone displays live measurement data from the DeviAligner.

The app can import a list of planned targets and align accordingly. When alignment is achieved a report may be exported for QA. The starting azimuth can be reviewed and verified at the drill site.

DeviSight Tool

The DeviSight uses GPS carrier phase measurements to provide the azimuth alignment and collar coordinates. It is used where the angle of the borehole is constant. The dip angle is measured using a protractor.

DeviGyro

The DeviGyro is a driller-operated tool that provides borehole deviation surveys. The non-magnetic Gyro operates inside the drill string at any inclination, direction, or location.

When positioned by wireline, it can record continuous inclination and azimuth measurements along the entire length of the drill string. When positioned by pushrods (horizontal or vertical up), it operates in multishot mode, recording inclination and azimuth at required depths.

DeviGyro Components

System Components

  • DeviGyro: a small, high-precision gyro.
  • Running gear: carries the gyro. See RG30 and RG40 below.
  • Larger centralizing wheels: for large diameter bores.
  • DeviCounter: measures depth and speed of the traverse.
  • Bluetooth readout: runs the DeviGyro app.
  • The DeviAligner or DeviSight can supply the initial azimuth for vertical applications.

Operation Overview

  1. Insert the DeviGyro into the running gear.
  2. Send survey parameters to the gyro using the Bluetooth readout. Azimuth must be supplied for vertical surveys.
  3. Clamp the DeviCounter to the drill rod. Run wireline (or auxiliary line) through the counter. Note that the auxiliary line must be long enough for the survey.
  4. Connect the Bluetooth readout to the DeviCounter to monitor speed and depth of the gyro.
  5. Connect the wireline to the running gear. Insert the running gear into the drill string.
  6. Lower at steady rate through the drill string. The system records depth and deviation measurements automatically.
  7. Pause 10 seconds at the bottom, then draw the running gear upwards at the same rate. Recording is restarted automatically. At the top, stop the survey.
  8. Use the Bluetooth readout to retrieve the data from the gyro.
  9. The readout then processes the data and displays a reference report.
