The Reason for Monitoring
The project involved tunneling beneath residential and commercial properties. Compensation grouting was used extensively. The injection of grout is intended to prevent settlements due to tunneling, but can also result in heave of overlying soils, which could damage nearby structures.
Monitoring with AMTS
To assist with the compensation grouting and to monitor the effects of tunneling, GEO-Instruments deployed three AMTS units (automated motorized total stations). The AMTS units were able to provide absolute and precise position information in 3D, using geo-reference points and control points. GEO-Instruments installed seventy glass prisms on the structures that would potentially be affected, and configured a network for real time data retrieval. The systems were wireless, minimizing deployment issues.
